3 Reasons Mobile-Friendly Websites Are So Important

As of last October, more people accessed the the internet via mobile and tablet devices than on their desk- or laptops. While the mobile devices only edged out their desktop counterparts by under 3%, it's a sign of things to come.

Businesses that don't prioritize bringing their websites up to date are going to be missing out on the opportunity to meet customers where they live— on their smartphones. (77% of adults in the U.S. own them, and the number's rising.) Failure to upgrade your site will completely shut out the increasing number of people who no longer even own a desktop computer.

People want the convenience of using their smartphones to surf without sacrificing the quality of the websites that they see on their desktops. Keep reading for more reasons why it's important to make your website mobile-friendly.

1. It Will Increase Your Traffic

People use their smartphones to conduct searches all day long— while they're sitting in traffic (don't do that!), watching TV, and doing chores. Some people even use their smartphone to search as they're using their desktop. If your website isn't mobile-friendly, you're missing out on a ton of traffic, particularly among the younger demographic. They use their smartphones for everything, from ordering lunch to locking down their mortgage.

With more than half of all searches happening via mobile device, it pays make your site accessible. Google's Hummingbird update has emphasized the importance of making your website mobile-friendly. Now, Google mobile searches are prioritizing mobile-friendly websites. If your site isn't optimized for mobile, it's not going to rank as high.

2. It Will Keep Customers Satisfied

A mobile-friendly website is a feature that will turn satisfied customers into evangelists about your brand. They'll be more likely to buy from you and they'll be more likely to recommend that other people purchase what you have to offer. Conversely, if your site isn't mobile-friendly, studies show that 57% of people won't recommend your business to their friends and family, and 40% won't purchase from you at all.

Customers prefer to do business with a company that has a fully optimized and updated website. Failure to keep your site up to date will erode your credibility in the eyes of your customers, sending them straight into the arms of another company— one with a mobile-friendly website.

3. It Will Increase Conversions

You might have the world's most effective CTAs and Landing Pages, but if a visitor to your site can't see it on their mobile device, you're missing out. Trying to see a desktop-ready CTA on your phone is an exercise in frustration, and a good reason to click to your competitor's mobile-friendly site to make your purchase.

Mobile website users are notoriously impulsive. If they're impressed by what they see, it's likely that they'll make an immediate purchase, thus increasing conversions. If they're not, it's unlikely that they'll give your site a second chance.

In addition to the positives of upgrading your site, don't forget the downsides of not having a mobile-friendly site.

The Millenials— If they can't do it on a smartphone or tablet, it's likely that they won't do it at all. Whether they're ordering their lunch or locking down a good rate on their mortgage, they do it on a mobile device. Failure to adapt will keep this very key demographic from engaging with your brand at all.

Mobile Shopping— 62% of smartphone users have purchased something online in the last six months, and 80% of shoppers have actually made an online purchase while in a brick-and-mortar store. Mobile shopping is on the rise, and failure to accommodate the people who prefer to shop that way will become a big issue— potentially a business-ending issue.

Ditching the DesktopDesktop usage is down. Between the younger people preferring mobile devices and older people realizing that they can check Facebook and their email on a tablet or smartphone just as easily as on their desktop, fewer desktops are being used for casual browsing. This means that if you want your site to be seen as a viable option, you're going to have to go mobile-friendly sooner than later.
